All there is to know about Psychiatric Intensive Care Units

In Ontario, intensive or high-intensity inpatient psychiatric care varies significantly across jurisdictions. For this reason, in October 2020, Ontario's Mental Health and Addictions Local Health Integration Network (LHIN) Leads reached out to EENet to find answers to the following questions:

  1. How are high intensity psychiatric beds (or psychiatric intensive care units) defined, and what do they look like within Canada and beyond (e.g., in the United Kingdom, United States, Australia and Ireland)?
  2. What are best practices for admission, reassessment, staffing, and step-down, transfer or discharge?
  3. What strategies have been developed to improve utilization of PICU beds?
  4. What are international standards for PICU beds per capita?

Check out our evidence summary to see what we found.
