POSITION OVERVIEW

The Director of Research oversees programs of applied research to realize the strategic priorities and directions set out in HRI’s strategic plan. Reporting to the Executive Director, the Director of Research supports the advancement of collaborative research partnerships, leads the development of the research infrastructure, and provides oversight and coordination of applied research projects, grant writing, and knowledge translation activities.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Work with the Executive Director to develop and execute a strategic plan for HRI
  • Support the development of external scientific partnerships that advance mutual agendas
  • Collaborate with HRI Scientific leaders, staff and affiliated partners to develop and implement annual research plans that align with HRI strategic plans
  • Provide staff leadership to teams responsible for project management, financial administration and grant reporting in collaboration with Principal Investigators when appropriate
  • Work with project teams to develop knowledge translation plans and initiatives
  • Develop and advance HRI’s research infrastructure with a primary research partner (Homewood Health Inc.,) and othersZ

POSITION REQUIREMENTS

Education and Experience

PhD or MD relevant to mental health and addictions (e.g., clinical epidemiology, social science, clinical research, etc.)

Minimum 7-10 years of applied research experience including project management, fiscal management and research management with at least 2 years of supervisory/management experience.

Skills and Competencies

  • Experience in hiring, directing, evaluating and mentoring researchers in a team-based environment
  • In-depth knowledge of research ethics, research processes, methodology, and managing research grants/projects
  • Proficient in project management and budgets
  • Proven ability to engage internal and external stakeholders in building collaborative plans and projects
  • Excellent communication skills, both oral and written
  • Ability to maintain effective working relationships with affiliated scientists, government contacts, and foundations/funders
  • Demonstrated track record securing external funding for applied research is an asset
  • Ability to resolve complex situations with good judgement and diplomacy
  • Results oriented, solution focused and strong problem-solving skills
  • Strong computer proficiency and knowledge of various systems and software applications
  • A commitment to HRI’s vision and mission to improve lives of people affected by mental illness and addiction
  • Commitment to HRI values of Anti-Oppression, Equity and Inclusion and supports related organizational goals and activities
