I found an article as to what I was referring to in Southern Ontario regarding Diversion Programs and Mental Health Services and Police working together. This is a recently new initiative where mental health workers ride along with Police.

It's my understanding this is the first ride along program but programs like COAST have been around for awhile. And like anything they improve with time, and training.

Mental health professionals ride along with Hamilton police:
