Research Study: Piloting Mental Health Quality Indicators Using the Ontario Common Assessment of Need

Dear Colleagues,

We are writing to invite your organization's participation as a collaborator on a research study piloting mental health quality indicators (MHQI) derived from the Ontario Common Assessment of Need (OCAN). CMHA Toronto and CMHA Ontario are undertaking this study. The purpose of the study is to evaluate the feasibility of using these MHQI for carrying out measurement of outcomes of community mental health services and to identify common data quality issues found in the OCAN and ways of addressing these issues. The study will pilot various quality indicators and assess the relative strengths and limitations of these indicators to support organizational quality improvement activities as well as sector performance measurement.

Organizations participating in this study are asked to send a volunteer representative for a Research Advisory Committee for the study. Members of the committee would meet regularly and would provide feedback on the pilot quality indicators developed from OCAN data. Participating organizations would receive reports for their organization that include developmental outcome measures as well as data quality reports. De-identified data would be provided from the Integrated Assessment Reader for the purpose of this study. This research has be approved by the University of Toronto Research Ethics Board.

In order to participate, organizations would need to be using the Self or Full OCAN in one of the following functional centres: Assertive Community Treatment, Case Management, Early Psychosis Intervention, Support within Housing. Additionally, the executive director/chief executive officer or other person with the authority to provide permission for the organization’s participation is required.

A detailed description of the study is available on the attached information sheet and consent form for participation.

If you are interested in participating in this study or would like more information about the study, please contact Frank Sirotich at fsirotich@cmhato.org by Monday May 31st.

The first Research Advisory Committee meeting will be held on Monday, June 14th from 1:00 to 3:00. Meeting details and coordinates will be forwarded to participating/interested organizations the week of May 31st.

Thank you in advance for your time and consideration.

Sincerely,

Frank Sirotich Ph.D., R.S.W.
