Anti-Oppressive Practice in Youth Work

Join us for this two-part workshop to learn the basic concepts, terminologies, social context, and organizational realities of oppression.

This FREE workshop will be facilitated by Nene Kwasi Kafele, an educator, social justice and youth advocate, researcher and community organizer. Participants will identify some core principles at the personal, relational, and organizational levels in working with marginalized youth.

We will also identify some key approaches to personal growth and organizational change. We will use good evidence and data to drive our discussion, reflection, learning and commitment. We will use an intersectional lens that centers anti-Black and anti-Indigenous racism, homophobia, religious bigotry, and gender discrimination as they impact young people, as well as agency staff.

Learning Goals

  • Explore and understand the concepts, scope, impact, and implications of systemic oppression
  • Understand how oppression impacts the emotional wellbeing of young people (with a strong focus on issues like depression and traumatic stress)
  • Explore anti-oppressive options and strategies for supporting youth to question, challenge, disrupt, and dismantle oppressive systems and structural barriers.
  • Build basic skills to provide organizational leadership in the area of anti-oppression.

We recognize that online events come with their own set of challenges – including virtual fatigue! – which is why this workshop has been divided into two parts.

🗓 Part 1: Thursday, July 21 | 1PM-3PM
🗓 Part 2: Friday, July 22 | 1PM-3PM
