Understanding personality disorders (PDs)
Presented by SickKids CCMH Learning Institute
Live webinar November 2 and 8, 2021 |Time: 9 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. EST
Facilitator: Anita Federici, PhD, CPsych, FAED
Client age category: For professionals who work with adult clients.
Personality disorders (PDs) are characterized by pervasive and problematic patterns of thinking, emotion regulation, and interpersonal functioning.
The DSM -5 categorizes ten PDs into three clusters: (A) eccentric, (B) emotional/erratic, and (C) anxious/fearful. Despite significant advances in our understanding of personality disorders, however, misconceptions, stigma, and judgment about them continue to plague the health-care field. Rates of PDs are higher across levels of care (e.g., outpatient, day treatment, inpatient, emergency rooms) and commonly co-occur with eating disorders, substance use disorders, and trauma. Furthermore, many individuals who do not respond to standard evidence-based treatment often struggle with a PD. Despite these data, most practitioners do not have adequate training in the assessment, causal and maintaining factors, and treatment of PDs.
Over the last decade, several key limitations have been observed:
- Inadequate assessment leading to an incomplete conceptualization for client and clinician
- Pervasive hesitation/trepidation to communicate a PD diagnosis
- Lack of integration of up-to-date neuroscience to guide interventions
- Treatment plans often not suitable to address the underlying problems
- Ongoing use of judgmental language applied to those suffering from a PDs
It is imperative that health-care practitioners have foundational knowledge of PDs. To that end, this training is designed for anyone in the health-care domain who wants to gain a more comprehensive understanding of PDs. This webinar draws on the most up-to-date literature.
Learning objectives:
- Identify similarities and differences among the three PD categories
- Explain how differences in brain anatomy and physiology contribute to the development and maintenance of PDs (e.g., emotional over vs under control)
- Utilize clinician administered and self-report measures to aid in assessment
- Implement key strategies to increase confidence in talking with clients about their diagnosis in a hopeful and empowering manner.
- Design more effective treatment plans to address common obstacles for those struggling with a PD
This webinar will include a didactic portion, group discussion, role-play, a question and answer period, and ready-to-use client handouts.
Registration fees: $250. Student and group rates are available.
