#MHForAll webinar: Youth Mental Health

online

The evidence is clear - we are facing a crisis when it comes to youth mental health.

Around the world more than 50% of young people will have experienced at least one period of mental ill-health by the age of 25, with mental health conditions accounting for 16% of the global burden of disease and injury in people aged 10–19 years.

What is being done to tackle this growing issue around the world? How can we progress the conversation and help spur on action?

Next week we’ll be joined by a panel of experts to help answer these questions and more at our next #MHForAll webinar. This session’s line up includes:

  • Moitreyee Sinha, Cities Rise
  • Yves Miel Zuniga, MentalHealthPH
  • Aviwe Fuanani, Waves For Change
  • Joanna Lai, UNICEF
  • Zeinab Hijazi, UNICEF

If you have any questions you'd like to ask our panelists, please submit them to the Webinar Team at webinars@unitedgmh.org before Tuesday 20th April.

Key messages from this week's webinar:

1 in 7 adolescents has a mental disorder. This has increased during the COVID-19 pandemic, and we don’t yet know the long term impact on youth mental health.

The need for real intergenerational partnership is key. Young people need to be part of the conversation, and have a seat at the table when it comes to decision making.

Directly influencing policy makers and decision makers is key to affecting change. This is also necessary to close the treatment gaps and prioritise mental health at a national level.

We need to integrate mental health into the spaces where young people already are. This includes working with parents, caregivers, and teacher to ensure adequate support.

We must empower young people to speak about mental health. This way they can help to educate one another around the issue, and continue to break the stigma.
