Members of the Board are responsible for providing overall direction to Alberta Rural Development Network, including review and approval of ARDN’s strategic objectives and policies. The Board is supported by ARDN’s Executive Director and staff.

Our goal is to bring on new board members who are committed to supporting the sustainability of rural communities, addressing unique rural challenges, and participating in the growth of our organization.

We are looking for 3-5 new board members, and accepting applicants up to October 23, 2020 prior to our AGM. Applicants will be reviewed by the current ARDN Board before being invited to attend meetings and stand for election by the general membership at the Annual General Meeting on November 5, 2020.

Time Commitment & Travel

Directors serve for a three-year term, with the possibility of serving a second consecutive term, and are expected to attend:

  • Monthly (except July & August) 30 minute meetings of the Board of Directors held virtually, and
  • ARDN’s Annual General Meeting, held in person in the fall.

There is no compensation associated with this position. Directors are reimbursed for travel, accommodation and meal costs associated with attending ARDN in-person meetings and other authorized business. Meetings are held on weekdays.

Expectations & Responsibilities

Each Director is responsible for good governance of the Society, as dictated by the Alberta Societies Act.

Directors provide proper financial oversight by reviewing financial statements and ensuring proper financial controls are in place. Directors are expected to use due diligence in reviewing and approving financial and legal documents.

Directors are expected to enhance ARDN’s work and community outreach by actively cultivating partnerships and facilitating community connections.

Directors help to identify and recruit new board members, assess board performance, and are required to contribute to a positive board environment through respectful discussion.

Directors are asked to serve in an executive role (treasurer, secretary, chair, or vice-chair) or on a standing committee, as needed.

ARDN’s Board of Directors should represent the broad range of expertise, projects, and services the ARDN delivers, and should represent the variety of communities and organizations we serve.

It is important that members of the Board contribute a variety of skills and experience to provide effective leadership to ARDN. We are looking for individuals with:
