What is DBT?
DBT is a skills-based therapy where the general goal is to "learn how to change your own behaviours, emotions, and thoughts that are linked to problems in living" (Linehan, M., 2015). DBT sets out to solve these problems in living by providing a set of acceptance and change-based skills aimed at increasing awareness of the present moment (Mindfulness); tolerating distress and accepting reality (Distress Tolerance); understanding and regulating emotions (Emotion Regulation); and improving interpersonal communication (Interpersonal Effectiveness).
What's so fantastic about the DBT skills is that they are life skills that anyone, no matter their struggle (or strength!), can benefit from learning. The skills can be adapted and woven into psychotherapy sessions and client interactions, where DBT is not the main modality.
What You Will Gain:
- A thorough understanding of the DBT skills, their function and how to practice them with clients.
- Skills to assist with labelling and managing emotions; tolerating distress and accepting reality; increasing mindful awareness; and communicating needs to others.
- Strategies to help your clients create lasting behaviour changes.
- Tools to support individuals that experience their emotions as intense/overwhelming.
- First hand experience of what it's like to be in a DBT Skills Group as a participant (alongside fellow clinicians and students). You'll develop greater insight into your own habits and learn skills to better your own life.
- An intimate, engaging learning environment with a maximum participant size of 10.
Who Should Attend:
- Mental health clinicians and students: Social Workers, Psychotherapists, Nurses, Physicians, Occupational Therapists, Psychiatrists, Psychologists, Crisis Workers, Graduate Students, etc.
- Our trainings are suitable for those in a variety of different helping settings such as those conducting: Individual psychotherapy of any modality, group therapy, and/or therapeutic interactions that do not involve psychotherapy (e.g. crisis intervention, case management)
- Our courses are appropriate for both the experienced DBT clinician and those with little to no knowledge of the DBT Skills
- Those who enjoy learning by doing!
