Workshop Description

** This is an interactive live-stream event**

Many counsellors and clinicians are hearing from their clients about the benefits of cannabis and/or CBD for mental health and physical health conditions – some who have experienced rapid improvement in long-term conditions that did not respond to traditional therapies/medications. They wonder - if such results were possible for these clients, should they be discussing cannabis/CBD therapy with other clients who have similar conditions?

At the same time, clinicians have heard about the risks of cannabis, the increase in addiction rates and cannabis-induced psychosis, the role of cannabis in the onset of symptoms of schizophrenia, and the detrimental effects of cannabis on the developing brain.  With such contradictory information about the risks and benefits, they don’t know which clients could benefit and which could experience harm.

This workshop is designed to answer the questions that counsellors and clinicians have, in order to help them better educate their clients. Questions such as…

  • Who benefits from cannabis/CBD and what conditions is it known to help?
  • Is it safe?
  • For whom is cannabis/CBD contraindicated?
  • What about children, youth, people with serious mental illnesses like schizophrenia?
  • Who is at risk for cannabis addiction?
  • Differences between CBD and THC
  • Why are some people prescribed CBD on its own whereas others are prescribed a THC/CBD mix?
  • What are the typical doses recommended for different conditions?
  • Are there Health Canada regulated clinics dispensing cannabis/CBD?
  • Where to refer clients who may benefit from cannabis/CBD treatment

Dr. Michael Verbora, a practising physician and leader in this field, will provide researched-based information and answer your questions. He will focus on the various aspects of cannabis, including the way cannabinoids interact in the human body and the changes in physical and mental health when consuming cannabinoids. He will present the evidence known to date and the emerging science behind some of the benefits of cannabis & CBD therapy. The risks and adverse events seen with cannabis will also be discussed with a focus on the effects on mental health such as depression, anxiety and substance dependence.

This workshop will provide an in-depth look at cannabis from a balanced, evidence-based perspective that takes into account its historical applications, modern day use and the various reasons for the resurgence in popularity of this therapy. Lastly, the course will walk you through some of the legal channels for access and present a global overview of the cannabis landscape.

You will receive:

An electronic handout package emailed prior to the workshop and a workshop certificate afterwards.  Login details and instructions will be emailed in advance of the workshop.
