This training is for: All medical health professionals, medical health professionals, educators and direct service workers interested in developing and enhancing their skills in sharing mindfulness with children, adolescents and families.

Description: In this 3-day certificate program, participants will explore mindfulness theory and practice, and learn accessible and engaging ways to share mindfulness and neuroscience-info with children, adolescents and families in age-appropriate, playful and creative ways. By the end of this workshop participants will gain practice-based experience in facilitating mindfulness exercises and conducting inquiry. They will be able to identify considerations for leading mindfulness-based activities, practices and discussion, along with how to engage children and adolescents in mindfulness practice in individual, family and group therapy settings.

Full Workshop Overview: Mindfulness is increasingly being shared with children and adolescents in educational, medical, mental health, community and home settings. Research shows that mindfulness practice with children and adolescents can reduce stress, improve emotion regulation, foster academic learning, reduce anxiety, increase executive function, and promote overall well-being.

In this three day certificate program, participants will explore mindfulness theory and practice, and learn accessible and engaging ways to share this information with children, adolescents and families.  Through story, art, music, metaphor, movement and 'formal' practice, participants will learn to share mindfulness and neuroscience-info with children, adolescents and families in age-appropriate, playful and creative ways.  All playful practices will be infused with mindfulness principles such as acceptance, letting go, patience, non-judgment, non-striving, self-kindness and compassion.

This program will utilize didactic presentation, interactive discussions, videos, teach-backs, small and large group experiential exercises, live demonstrations and coached practice facilitation.  Participants will have the opportunity to lead mindfulness exercises and inquiry in a small group format with the aim of increasing confidence and proficiency in teaching mindfulness and leading inquiry.

Participants will also be provided with a detailed handout package, including a suggested format for structuring a mindfulness group for children and families, sample mindfulness scripts for children and adolescents and a variety of child-friendly mindfulness activity handouts that can be used in their relevant setting - whether that be therapeutic encounters with individuals, groups, families or classroom settings.

Learning Objectives:

  • Gain practice-based experience in facilitating mindfulness exercises and conducting inquiry.
  • Learn to engage children and adolescents in mindfulness practice - in individual, family and group therapy settings.
  • Be able to identify considerations for leading mindfulness-based activities, practices and discussion with children and families.
  • Be able to describe the myriad of benefits of mindfulness practice and it's connection with neurobiology to children, adolescents and families.
