This presentation aims to help family members understand the complex relationship between Borderline Personality Disorder (BPD) and substance abuse. This presentation is for anyone looking to learn the basics of this concurrent condition, its treatment options and how to support someone with this condition. Family members will gain a better understanding of the challenges posed by the co-occurrence of BPD and substance abuse. They will also be equipped with practical strategies to support their loved ones and themselves on the journey to recovery.
Dr. Shelley McMain is a senior scientist with the General Adult Psychiatry and Health Systems Division and the clinic head of the Borderline Personality Clinic at the Centre for Addiction and Mental Health (CAMH). She is an assistant Professor with the Department of Psychiatry, University of Toronto as well as an adjunct professor with the Department of Psychology at York University. Dr. McMain is studying psychotherapy methods and outcomes for borderline personality disorder (BPD), concurrent BPD and substance use disorders (SUDs), and self-harm and suicidal behaviour.
