Dialectical Behaviour Therapy Part 1: An introduction to essential components
October 3 and 4, 2019
Facilitator:
Lyndsey Davies, MSW., RSW.
This training is suitable for: Educators, mental health professionals, medical professionals, social workers and direct service workers.

This two-day workshop will present the theoretical underpinnings of DBT, the group and individual components, along with DBT skills from each of the four modules. Through the use of interactive lecture and experiential exercises, participants will learn how to conceptualize borderline personality disorder using the bio-social theory, the components of standard DBT, how to conduct a behavioural analysis and solution analysis of problematic behaviours, how to balance validation and change strategies and how to teach select DBT skills to clients.

Full Workshop Overview: Dialectical Behaviour Therapy (DBT) is an intensive out-patient therapy developed by Marsha Linehan to treat chronically suicidal clients diagnosed with Borderline Personality Disorder.  DBT has also been adapted to treat clients with addictions, eating disorders and other complex problems.  Working with clients who experience these difficulties is extremely challenging for mental health and direct service professionals.  DBT has proven to be effective in reducing suicidal, self-harm and other impulsive behaviours and to increase client engagement in therapy.  DBT blends Cognitive Behavioural Therapy with acceptance-based strategies stemming from Zen philosophy.  A primary therapeutic task is to balance acceptance of the client with a focus on change. During this workshop, participants will learn the theoretical underpinnings of DBT, the group and individual components and DBT skills from each of the four modules.

This two-day workshop is designed for clinicians who are interested in utilizing DBT in either group or individual settings with clients through the use of interactive lecture and experiential exercises.

You will learn:

  • Conceptualize borderline personality disorder using the bio-social theory
  • Recognize the components of standard DBT
  • Balance validation and change strategies
  • Conduct a behavioural analysis and solution analysis of problematic behaviours
  • Be able to teach select DBT skills to clients
