Pharmacology of Alcohol Use Disorder

With Dr. Tim Ayas MD FRCPC CCFP MPH BSc

Clinical Assistant Professor, University of Calgary

Psychiatrist, EHN Sandstone

Alcohol is by far the most commonly used drug by Canadians. There is relatively easy access, it is prominent in the media, and drinking culture often permeates the lives of young people. Moreover, it can become an unhealthy coping mechanism - a quick and temporary solution for those under immense stress or who are struggling with mental health. "In 2017, the rate of hospitalizations entirely caused by alcohol (249 per 100,000) was comparable to the rate of hospitalizations for heart attacks (243 per 100,000) and the rate was thirteen times higher than for opioids." (Canadian Centre for Substance Use and Addiction) With the pressures of the COVID-19 pandemic, the problem has only continued to worsen.

In this webinar, Dr. Tim Ayas takes our attention back to alcohol, one of the oldest sources of substance addiction. Join us for this educational session on alcohol use disorder, what it is and how to medically approach treatment, presented by one of our experienced psychiatrists based at EHN Sandstone in Calgary, AB.
