Empowering Teens: Understanding the Role of Need Satisfaction in Smartphone and Social Media Use
Event date: -
Event type: Single day (a day or less)
Most of us agree that our relationship with our phones is complicated - throw in the demands of a developing brain and this complexity reaches new heights! In this webinar, Dr. Natasha Parent will explore how basic psychological needs relate to adolescents' smartphone and social media use, and how engaging with these technologies can have both positive and negative effects for teens. We will unpack how these positive effects can support teens' developmental needs, and how things like FOMO can fuel behaviours that may be harmful to teens' wellbeing. Throughout these topics, we will discuss how to best empower teens in their relationships with their smartphones and social media.
Dr. Natasha Parent is an Evaluation Lead at BC Emergency Health Services and Adjunct Professor at the University of British Columbia. Her research broadly examines contextual factors relating to health and wellbeing across adolescence and early adulthood. For her dissertation, Dr. Parent investigated teen's motivations for using technology within a positive developmental framework. She is well-published in this area, and is regularly invited to present on the topic of youth and technology.
