Evolving single session therapy: Crisis conversations at the walk-in
Presented by SickKids CCMH Learning Institute
Live webinar: July 18, 2022 | 9 a.m. to noon EST
Facilitator: Scot Cooper, RP
The walk-in therapy clinic, as a quick access point to service, provides an open door to those experiencing a variety of difficulties. For people who consider themselves as “in crisis,” or experiencing emotions as overwhelming, it’s a venue to foster relief and safety. This half-day training draws from contemporary brief therapies and the anthropological work of van Gennep. It will explore a framework and key questions to assess, and address risk within single session therapy.
Shifting away from understanding distress as a breakdown or malfunction in personal coping, we will explore the experience of crisis as a transition in life. As such, distress offers clues as to what people are moving away from. What they are moving towards. Along with the circumstances under which that life might be possible. This includes ideas about elevating safety and identifying those who can play a part in the journey.
Together with Scot Cooper, participants will explore:
- Understanding of the experience of crisis as transition
- Specific ways to hear distress that provide entry points to hope and friendly conversation
- Several questions that assist people to navigate the experience of crisis and shore up safety in a single session
