In this webinar Steve Anderson, along with current students, will provide an overview of an innovative program from BC “Human Services Career Enriched Program” (HSCeP). The program is a result of true community collaboration at the school board, university, provincial government, social service agencies, and local judiciary levels. HSCep aims to promote school and community engagement, provide enrichment opportunities, increased school completion rates for both high school and university students and increase transition rates to post-secondary education.
The program is a nested, multi-level mentoring program in which high school psychology students are partnered with University students who co-train with a grade 10 students. HSCep educates students in the practices and disciplines of psychology plus offers a focused exposure to engaging, real life experience at the elementary school level. The program targets Gr 10 youth who are identified as having a high EQ (Emotional Quotient), the “natural helpers”, those kids who other kids go to in order to sort things out, to talk to etc.
Throughout the webinar, attendees will learn how the program has evolved from its beginnings in Chilliwack Senior Secondary (CSS)’s strong Psychology program to a successful applied psychology “markable for credit” course. Students from the program will add to the webinar by sharing their personal experiences.
Steve Anderson holds a B.Ed and a Masters in Administration and Curriculum Development He teaches Psychology at the highschool level as well as runs the Human Services program which engages primary/highschool/university level students. He has been invested in the welfare of Nigerian children from both a mental health and educational perspective since 2007, making at least one trip a year to Nigeria and is the Executive Director of the Wanted Children Foundation.
