Abstract: This is a fast-paced, interesting workshop which incorporates assessment tips and applicable case histories in a variety of settings where counselors may encounter situations involving self-injurious/self-mutilating behaviors. Understanding why a client may self-harm is key to being able to effectively and therapeutically work with such a client. This workshop will address the most common reasons clients self-injure and addresses the addictive model and differentiates between suicidal and para-suicidal behaviors. The subject of contracting for safety will also be discussed, and resources will be offered for working with this population.

- Assess clients with regard to the possibility they are engaging in SIB (self-injurious behavior)
- Differentiate between suicidal and para-suicidal behaviors
- Understand various reasons for self-injurious behaviors, including the Addiction Model
