With the rise of social sportsbooks and prediction markets, more youth are being exposed to gambling and gambling-like experiences than ever before. YGAP examined these emerging trends, looking closely at platforms ranging from social sportsbooks to arbitrage tools and prediction markets, to understand how they work , misconceptions they may create and the risks they can pose for young people.
In this webinar, we will share our findings on how underage youth are accessing these platforms. We will also examine how “free-to-play” sports apps use micro-transactions, premium passes, loot-box-style mechanics, daily raffles, wheel spins, and other gamified features that blur the line between gaming and real sports betting and can contribute to continuous engagement. In addition, we will explore how prediction markets position betting as a form of investment, presenting outcomes as “shares” to be bought rather than as gambling.
This session will discuss the signs of youth involvement and offer practical harm-reduction strategies parents and caregivers can use to provide meaningful support. The session will also help adults start open conversations and navigate key considerations to keep young people safe.
