Gambling Elements in Video Games and How to Protect Yourself
Event date: -
Event type: Single day (a day or less)
Many video games let players spend money to buy randomized in-game items without knowing what they will receive. Often called loot boxes or gacha - these gambling-like products rarely contain the valuable item players hope to get, encouraging more spending. This is like typical gambling, but not generally covered by gambling law. Many countries have adopted some rules because of concerns about potential harm. This includes an attempt to ban loot boxes in Belgium, China's rule that video game companies must tell players the chances of getting different items; and the UK's rule that any adverts for games with loot boxes must come with a warning. Unfortunately, companies have found many ways to get around or break these rules.
We will explore the importance of education and harm reduction to keep players, especially young people, safe when playing video games with gambling elements.
