Identifying, Assessing and Treating Concurrent Disorders: A clinical overview for assessment, practical applications, tools and techniques when working with concurrent disorders in teens and adults.

This training is suitable for: Mental health professionals, psychotherapists, counsellors, psychologists, social workers, medical professionals, direct service workers, shelter and hostel workers, child and youth workers, youth justice workers and educators.

Participants will gain an overview for assessment, practical applications and clinical tools and strategies when working with clients having a concurrent disorder. This workshop will discuss effective clinical practices when working with the individual and the family and building capacity within your agency to provide effective care for this complex population. By the end of this workshop participants will be able to screen and assess for the treatment of concurrent disorder, have acquired skills in using motivational interviewing along with an overview of working with concurrent disorder integration treatment approaches.

Full Workshop Overview: Clients presenting with either a substance use or mental health problem are more likely than not to have a concurrent disorder. By understanding the connection or co-occurring interaction between the substance use and mental health problems, this will enhance the quality for developing effective assessment, treatment and community-based plans using collaborative, integrative and responsive approaches to client care.

This workshop will provide a clinical overview for assessment, practical applications, and tools and techniques.

Meet the Facilitator:

Ian Robertson.pngIan Robertson, MSW., RSW
Ian Robertson, MSW, RSW, currently works as the Regional Clinical Supervisor for Addictions and Mental Health at the Niagara Health System. previously, Ian was as a substance abuse counsellor at the Niagara Withdrawal Management Centre, the New Port Centre, as a clinical therapist for Mental Health Services, Regional Facilitator and Trainer for Mental Health, and also consultant for several community organizations. He is a certified Clinical Traumatologist, Compassion Fatigue Specialist and Substance Abuse Counsellor. He is trained in Trauma Incident Reduction (TIT), Level 1 and 2 of EMDR, Threat Assessment, Cognitive Behavioural Therapy, Dialectical Behavioural Therapy, Cognitive Process Therapy and Motivational Interviewing. Ian has been a speaker at international, national, provincial and regional conferences and an organization trainer on topics such as substance abuse, trauma, concurrent disorders, mental health, youth at risk, youth threat assessment, motivational interviewing, stages of change, organizational trauma-informed practices. Ian received an advanced certification as a clinical supervisor from Smith College, School of Social Work in MA, USA. Ian also owns and operates a private practice in Niagara.
