Course Description:

This course provides information for service providers to feel more confident, competent and comfortable providing services to people with diverse gender identities and expressions or whose sexual orientation may be different than the majority. Stigma and marginalization impact an individual’s health and well-being in many ways and affects whether that person will access services when they are in need of them. We want to help agencies to become more accessible, places of welcome for the communities we serve. We will use case studies and give concrete, evidence-based examples of ways to improve frontline service, documentation and policies. There will also be a focus on best practice services for trans and non-binary folks.

Did you know that LGBT2-SIQA people are more highly represented as substance users? In this workshop, we will discuss factors that contribute to this, including how this group has been targeted by alcohol and tobacco companies as a demographic.

Have you taken a course like this with anya before? In this session, we will be taking a more in-depth look at the issues with enhanced learning in a multidisciplinary setting.

Facilitator Biography:

anya gwynne | PARN
anya gwynne is a writer, performance artist and troublemaker in Peterborough, ON. They have an honours degree in English Literature and Cultural studies and a background in expressive arts. They are currently the Education Coordinator at PARN-Your Community AIDS Resource Network presenting dynamic workshops on several topics including safer sex, homonegativity, sexual orientation, gender identity and the development of safer spaces. anya has facilitated the Rainbow Youth Program for the last 9 years and developed and implemented programming with the Peterborough Drug Strategy, to support youth to talk openly about their experiences with substances. They believe strongly in the power of stories and shared learning as ways to create stronger, more equitable communities.

For over 15 years, the Rainbow Youth Program has been providing educational workshops for service providers, including health care professionals, law enforcement, social services and educators, to increase knowledge about LGBT2-SIQA identities and raise awareness about the impacts of homonegativity and transphobia. These workshops are grounded in a strength-based, interactive learning approach, including group work, video and capacity building activities. We work to creating a positive learning environment that allows for asking questions, recognizing new perspectives, and building skills for allyship and best practice care.

Who should attend this training?

QoC training sessions are designed for helping professionals in Peterborough City and County. We define "helping professional" as anyone in a position of interacting with people in providing a service.

Will food be provided?

Coffee, tea, and light snacks are included. Lunch will not be provided. There are several restaurants within walking distance of the Lions Centre. Please feel free to contact the Project Lead for recommendations.

Is there parking?

There is free parking at the Lions Centre, but come early as spaces can fill up fast! Street parking is also available.
