An Introduction to Cognitive Behaviour Therapy for Adults with Eating Disorders (CBT-ED): Principles and Practice

March 3, 2023 @ 11:00 a.m. - 1:00 p.m. ET

Presented by: Lisa Boniferro, MSW, RSW

Eating disorders are mental health concerns that impact peoples’ psychological, social, and physical wellbeing and affect approximately 6% of the population at any given time (Qian et al., 2022). Eating disorders are diverse in terms of presentation, but typically are characterized by disturbances in eating behaviours and an undue influence of shape and weight on how people evaluate themselves. While eating disorders are quite serious, they are treatable. This webinar provides an overview of the evidence base for CBT-ED, the leading treatment for adults, and describes the "active ingredients” of the model. A case example is used to illustrate the sequencing of treatment, the use of specific interventions, and therapist approach. We will also discuss the limitations of CBT-ED, including the need for future research and increased supervision for those implementing this model in practice.
