Managing Alcohol Problems Online Course

In this five-week course designed for physicians and other front-line clinicians, five self-directed, online modules explore the impact of alcohol problems and the use of common pharmacotherapies and psychosocial treatments for alcohol use disorder.

Module 1: Introduction to alcohol problems

Module 2: Screening, assessment and brief intervention

Module 3: Withdrawal management

Module 4: Pharmacotherapy for alcohol problems

Module 5: Psychosocial treatment approaches

This course is for health care practitioners and aims to enhance their knowledge and skills to more effectively identify, assess and treat clients with alcohol use problems.  The course includes various instructional activities, such as case scenarios, interactive review questions and end-of-module quizzes.

Learning Objectives

After successfully completing this course, you will be able to:

• identify the short-term and long-term health impacts of alcohol use
• identify clinical signs and symptoms of problem drinking
• identify screening tools available to identify a person with alcohol problems
• describe the components of a comprehensive assessment for alcohol use disorder
• describe how to assess and treat patients experiencing alcohol withdrawal
• explain the medications prescribed for the treatment of alcohol use disorder
• describe commonly used psychosocial treatment approaches for alcohol use disorder.
