Motivational Interviewing (MI) is a form of collaborative conversation for strengthening a client's motivation and commitment to change. This workshop teaches the guiding principles, strategies and skills for incorporating Miller and Rollnik’s MI techniques into practice.
MI consists of a set of empirically validated counselling techniques designed to support client-centered work for addressing the common problem of ambivalence about change by paying particular attention to the language of change. MI helps build rapport with clients, engages them in treatment and/or intervention, explores ambivalence, motivates clients towards behavior change and supports efforts to reduce risk behaviors by acknowledging and enhancing their natural capacities and assets within an atmosphere of acceptance and compassion. This workshop covers both individual and group approaches designed to create opportunities for clients to move forward with change in their lives.
Learning Objectives:
- Understand the principals and strategies of motivational interviewing
- Understand key techniques that are used in motivational interviewing
- Strengthen client motivation by working through the ambivalence that accompanies undertaking change
- Apply techniques that work best with resistant clients to help them move forward
- Cultivate ideas about how to further incorporate motivational interviewing into their practice
