Course overview
This course prepares physicians, specialist physicians and psychiatrists to: 
•    integrate evidence-based motivational interviewing (MI) into practice 
•    use MI strategies throughout a patient’s process of change. 
The course is based on the principles detailed in the required textbook, Motivational Interviewing: Helping People Change and Grow, 4th edition (2023), by William R. Miller and Stephen Rollnick.

•    Two live, simulated patient (SP) consultations per participant 
•    Real-time feedback and coaching from an experienced MI coach
•    Live, online, interactive, group-learning labs
•    Authentic patient-care scenarios forming the basis of contextual learning
Required text
Course participants must purchase the textbook, which is available in print and digital formats (ebook/audiobook): Miller, W.R. & Rollnick, S. (2023). Motivational Interviewing: Helping People Change and Grow (4th ed.). New York: Guilford Press. Available here.
 

Learning objectives
Upon completion of this course, participants will be able to do the following:
•    Describe the evidence-based method of MI, including its purpose and underlying principles (CanMEDS Role: Scholar).
•    Build patient-centered relationships grounded in partnership, acceptance, compassion, and empowerment (CanMEDS Roles: Communicator, Professional).
•    Use MI communication skills (OARS) to explore patient issues, context and preferences (CanMEDS Role: Communicator).
•    Facilitate behavior change in patients by attending to, eliciting and strengthening change talk (CanMEDS Roles: Communicator, Health Advocate).
•    Integrate MI’s four-task model into clinical practice.
•    Reflect on performance to identify gaps and implement improvements (CanMEDS Roles: Medical Expert, Scholar, Leader, Professional).
 

Dates and times
•    The course runs from February 10—April 7, 2026 (note: pre-course activities begin February 2).
•    Live, online sessions take place every Tuesday at 4:00 pm ET (75 minutes per session).
