The ongoing overdose crisis in Canada has claimed the lives of over 40,000 people between 2016-2023. Parents and professionals working with youth need to know how to protect not only themselves, but also young people who are using or considering using opioids, stimulants or sedatives for any purpose.
This workshop examines opioids, sedatives and stimulants from a neutral lens, discussing their history, youth trends in use, effects, risks and harm reduction strategies. We will also explore conversation strategies and skills that adults can use to address risky substance use with young people in their lives. Join us as we examine...
Prevalence of youth substance use
The reasons that youth use / do not use opioids, sedatives and stimulants
Medical uses of opioids, sedatives and stimulants
Effects, risks and harms
Impact of Naloxone and its role in emergency support
Risks of mixing substances
The Good Samaritan Overdose Act
How adults can have non-judgmental dialogue with youth about substance use
Reducing stigma surrounding substance use
And more!
