The ongoing overdose crisis in Canada has claimed the lives of over 50,000 people since 2016. Parents and professionals working with youth need to know how to protect not only themselves, but also young people who are using or considering using opioids, stimulants or sedatives for any purpose.
Join us as we explore:
- Medical vs recreational uses of opioids, sedatives and stimulants
- Legal vs illicit substance use prevalence in Canada among youth
- Reasons youth choose to use pharmaceuticals and illegal drugs
- Effects of substance use
- Myths & misconceptions
- Signs of harm, risks of misuse or overdose
- Mixing opioids, sedatives and stimulants
- Role of NARCAN/Naloxone
- The Good Samaritan Drug Overdose Act
- Talking with youth about substance use
This workshop examines opioids, sedatives and stimulants from a neutral lens, discussing their history, youth trends in use, effects, risks and harm reduction strategies. We will also explore conversation strategies and skills that adults can use to address risky substance use with young people in their lives.
