This interactive workshop presents The Kit for Centering Black Youth Wellbeing, an online hub that takes a multi-faceted approach to addressing anti-Black racism and centering the wellbeing of Black youth, families, and communities.

The Kit was developed by Youth Research and Evaluation eXchange (YouthREX), based at the School of Social Work at York University.

The Kit provides:

  • the knowledge and tools to understand the historical roots and context of present-day manifestations of anti-Black racism;
  • engagement with research on the impact of anti-Black racism on Black youth, families, and communities;
  • critical practices for centering the wellbeing of Black youth and communities; and
  • the opportunity to commit to ongoing personal, professional, and organizational accountability.

The Call-In-Cards for Anti-Black Racism Action, the action component of The Kit, centre critical self-reflexivity as the source and impetus to connect understandings of anti-Black racism to anti-Black racism action – at the individual, program, and community levels. The focus on action is critical, because anti-Black racism work is a continuous journey of transformation that requires ongoing reflection, learning, and unlearning.

Each card features a scenario on one side and four reflection prompts on the other. The scenarios detail Black youth’s experiences of anti-Black racism in different areas of their lives, including at school, work, and play.

This workshop will use the Call-In-Cards to foster dialogue and share strategies to support participants in moving beyond 'stuckness' to commit to action in their own spheres of influence.

Co-hosted and co-facilitated by Cyril Cromwell, YouthREX Director of Learning & Development; Rahma Kiongozi, YouthREX Research Assistant; and Adrienne Young, YouthREX Research Assistant & Ph.D Student, School of Social Work, York University.
