Solution Focused Coaching & Counselling workshop: Early-Bird Pricing Ends May 12th
Event date: -
Event type: Single day (a day or less)
Workshop Description
Solution-Focused Brief Counselling/Coaching is an evidence-based and strength-based framework for purposeful dialogue that promotes positive growth and builds on a client’s preferred future. With this approach, people often experience a profound paradigm shift which allows them to create a meaningful and manageable forward-moving process and enjoy a positive shift in confidence, motivation and self-perception.
The Solution-Focused Brief approach was first developed by Steve deShazer, Insoo Kim Berg and their team, after spending thousands of hours carefully observing live and recorded therapy sessions and noting which behaviours or words on the part of the therapist reliably led to positive change in their clients. It was found that, contrary to the assumptions of most psychotherapeutic approaches, it was not necessary to make an extensive analysis of the history and cause of their clients' problems before attempting to develop any sort of solution. Thus, the solution-focused approach concentrates on finding solutions in the present time and exploring one’s hope for the future to find quicker resolution of one’s problems or to achieve one’s goals.
The Solution-Focused approach has gained impressive empirical support over the years and was certified as an Evidenced Based Treatment by SAMHSA’s National Registry of Evidence-based Programs Practices (NREPP). Its effect sizes are similar to other evidenced-based approaches, such as CBT and IPT, but these effects are found in fewer average sessions.
The Solution-Focused Brief model is now being applied to coaching settings as well, to help people reach their optimal potential. The application of the model in coaching vs. counselling settings is almost identical, with the exception of one simple question (which will be identified in the workshop!).
This two-day workshop introduces the foundational principles and techniques of Solution-Focused Brief Counselling & Coaching in a highly experiential and dialogic method. In-class activities include real-time demonstrations and peer coaching practice using solution-focused dialogue. Participants will learn how to have solution-building dialogue in both personal and professional settings while exchanging feedback, fortifying rapport, and generating client-directed outcomes and strategies
You will learn:
- The components of a Solution-Focused Brief framework including contract, preferred future, instances, and progress
- Helpful opening questions (and which questions to avoid)
- The Listen-Select-Build model
- The Dialogic Orientation Quadrant (DOQ): A tool to help orient our conversations towards the future & to map our progress
- The CAB model (for sequencing the conversation in the most effective way)
- The one question that differentiates solution-focused counselling from solution-focused coaching
