The new school year marks a period of change for youth, as well as a source of developing stress and anxiety. Young people may turn to substance use as a coping mechanism in hopes of managing stress, anxiety and depression without clearly understanding how these substances affect their mental health in the short and long term.

Join Drug Free Kids Canada for a free presentation that explores the topic of coping with substance use, especially as we transition into the new academic year. Together, this 60 minute presentation will discuss:

  • Youth mental health and wellness in Canada, with a focus on anxiety and stress
  • Adaptive vs maladaptive coping strategies
  • Impact of commonly consumed substances (nicotine, alcohol, cannabis, opioids) on mental wellness, stress, anxiety and depression)
  • Risk and protective factors impacting harmful or risky substance use
  • Strategies for parents to speak with youth at different ages about substance use and mental health

At DFK, our vision is to ensure that all young people will be able to live their lives free of problematic substance use and addiction.
