Support in practice: Harm reduction in youth mental health and substance use services

About this webinar:
The current overdose crisis and the new reality of cannabis legalization are underpinning a drive to re-examine the range of practices around substance use and their implications for YMHSU services. Given the acute extent of the overdose crisis, some stakeholders, including people with lived and living experience, have highlighted the critical need to increase community capacity to provide compassionate, non-judgemental harm reduction services.

Through a webinar led by youth experts at Canadian Students for Sensible Drug Policy (CSSDP), attendees will be able to learn practical strategies for integrating harm reduction approaches into their services, as well as learning about the broader context of advocacy to reduce harms by removing criminal penalties surrounding drug use in Canada.

Learning objectives: This webinar will
● provide an introduction to the basics of harm reduction
● highlight the critical need for community members and agency staff to be equipped with skills and resources to reduce harms that may occur in relation to different types of drug use
● provide critical insight into the role of drug use in young people’s lives and its associations to various social determinants of health, social locations and states of mind
● provide access to skill and capacity building resources
● advance the voices of lived experience in developing effective pragmatic, programmatic and advocacy-based approaches to reducing harms and supporting those seeking to reduce their drug use or to abstain
