Take ACTion: Cultivating Psychological Flexibility for Both Therapist and Client

This webinar will explore how Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT) can be applied not only to help clients but also to support therapists in their own emotional well-being. By fostering psychological flexibility, therapists can recognize and address their own struggles and pain, which can lead to distress or possibly burnout. This session will guide participants through key ACT processes to help both therapist and client identify where they get stuck, how these patterns are tied to emotional pain, and practical strategies to break free from these cycles of distress. Attendees will learn how applying ACT principles in the therapy room can create a more compassionate, flexible, and balanced therapeutic experience for everyone involved.

This webinar is free for all to attend!

Presented by the Ontario Association of Social Workers and Sarah Walsh, MSW, RSW

Sarah Walsh, MSW, RSW. I’ve been practicing psychotherapy as a Registered Social Worker for a little over 10 years. My clinical experience and interests have been varied, but really centred on both mindfulness and applied behavioural science. I first began learning about Contextual Behavioural Science (CBS) community and about Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT) in 2018; it was eye opening. ACT processes brought things together for me, both as a clinician but also as a person, in ways I had not previously articulated. ACT and other CBS approaches are compassionate, meaningful and accessible. I have been part of learning and supporting learning in the ACT community in Ontario since 2019, when I joined the Ontario Chapter for the Association of Contextual Behavioural Science. My values as a clinician are to remain curious and continue growing.

The Ontario Association of Social Workers (oasw.org) is the voice of the social work profession in Ontario. It is a voluntary, bilingual, non-profit association representing 9,500+ social workers. OASW works to actively speak on behalf of social workers on issues of interest to the profession and advocates for the improvement of social policies and programs directly affecting social work practice and client groups served. OASW also offers high-quality, free or low-cost professional development opportunities to social workers and other health and mental health care providers through our OASW Learning Centre (olc.oasw.org)
