Taking Group Work Online
Thu, Nov 19, 2020 12:00 PM - 1:30 PM EST
Presented by: Dr. Ellen Sue Mesbur & Dr. Barbara Muskat
During the COVID-19 pandemic, there has been an increased appreciation for the need for human connection and the loss of many opportunities to connect with others through groups. Current practice realities brought on by the pandemic have led social workers to adapt their practice and embrace on-line methods. While there has been some training about adaptation of clinical practice to the virtual world, there has been limited guidance about facilitating on-line groups.
This webinar will review the basics of on-line group facilitation, highlighting the adaptations required for this modality. Examples include adaptations for group engagement, cohesion, development of norms, ethical considerations and suggestions for on-line activities.
Learning Goals:
- Learn about similarities and differences between facilitating in-person and online group work and worker role in online group work
- Develop strategies for member engagement, “Netiquette”: development of group norms, and sustaining group cohesion
- Gain clarity about ethical considerations specific to on-line group work
- Review activities suited to an on-line format for different stages of the online group
This Webinar is FREE for Registered Social Workers, Registered Social Service Workers and Students of Social Work and Social Service Work Programs. Please note: If you are not an RSW, RSSW or student of these programs, you may still attend but will be charged a nominal fee of $20.
I am in a Master's program at Athabasca University in Counselling.
Thank you,
Joan Miller
