Thanksgiving in a Climate of Change: Reflecting on the Future of Social Work
Tuesday, March 21, 2023 @ 9:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. ET
Presented by: Elder Gae Ho Hwako (Norma Jacobs) and Dr. Timothy Leduc
In the book Ǫ da gaho dḛ:s: Reflecting on our Journeys (2022 MQUP), Gae Ho Hwako Norma Jacobs states: “When I look around, I see the many gifts that surround and nurture us; all the life in its many forms as plants, medicines, trees and animals… Our relationship with all things should be sacred. Each morning we need to give acknowledgement and Thanksgiving, it is daylight again and I have life.”
By giving thanks we recognize the wholistic interconnectivity of our selves, families, communities, cultures, nations, profession and species to all our relations. Because the modern and colonial world has long forgotten this weave of life, we have collectively moved into an era that some call the Anthropocene, a time when nothing is untouched by the unending expansion of modern systems (political, economic, cultural, virtual) and their inevitable global impacts. The interconnected nature of our climate of change is revealing to us the partial, dualistic and ultimately limited modern worldview that continues to constrict the social justice principles our vocation of social work holds as its ideal. Through approaching our climate of change in this way, this workshop will give you an opportunity to reflect on the values of honouring relational boundaries, slowing down modern ways of living, and attending our modern blocks (as they manifest in social work) to a sustainable future on planet Earth; in other words our climatic truth-work.
