“I do not want to say the wrong thing”: A Facilitated Discussion Addressing Systemic Racism, Racial Trauma, and White Supremacy
Presented by:
Rai Reece, PhD (she/her), Assistant Professor, Department of Sociology, Toronto Metropolitan University (TMU). Dr. Reece is an interdisciplinary scholar-abolitionist whose work broadly examines how carceral logics are relationally organized by racial capitalism and white supremacy, and how carceral processes in Canada are maintained by historical and contemporary narratives of white settler colonial violence. Since 2005 she has been involved in anti-prison work with prisoners and ex-prisoners and has facilitated numerous facilitation workshops in the areas of anti-racism and anti-oppression for community agencies. Her most recent publication is titled, “It’s not just about work and living conditions: The Underestimation of the Covid-19 Pandemic for Black Canadian Women” (2021), with Dr. Melanie Knight and Renee Ferguson, and a forthcoming chapter titled “Black and Racialized Women in the Canadian Criminal Justice System” (October 2022) will be published in the third edition of Women and the Canadian Criminal Justice System (eds. Barker and Tavcer).
Session 1 – Thursday, October 27th
12:00pm - 2:00 pm (Eastern Time)
This facilitation and workshop will be a targeted session exploring systemic and institutionalized oppression and racism. Particular emphasis focuses on anti-Black and anti-Indigenous racism at the Micro (networks) and the Macro (broader structural level). In addition, in this session we will discuss the importance of decolonization in your work and how to conduct anti-racist equitable organizational and community-based work. This session also asks participants to be prepared to engage in challenging conversations about the impact of colonialism, slavery, multiculturalism narratives, whiteness, white supremacy, power, and privilege. This session will also focus on critical tools for co-conspiratorialship (critical partnership) for organizational and community-capacity development and social change. Given the current health pandemic emphasis will also be paid to supporting the continuity of this work amidst the impact of COVID-19.
