Trauma-Focused CBT Therapy for Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD)

This training is suitable for: Mental health professionals, medical professionals and direct service workers.
Description: Participants will understand the significant physiological, emotional and cognitive components of the trauma response and how they contribute to the development and maintenance of trauma symptoms and PTSD. Dr. Lee will present the rationale for and mechanisms underlying exposure-based therapy in treating PTSD symptoms and how trauma-focused cognitive behavioural therapy including prolonged exposure and cognitive restructuring can address these underlying processes to improve PTSD symptoms and functioning. The CBT skills introduced in this workshop will ultimately help clients to challenge unhelpful thinking styles, particularly with common themes after trauma including loss of control, powerlessness, and helplessness.
Full Workshop Overview: Exposure to trauma can result in significant difficulties including our emotional, cognitive and physiological responses. This workshop will help participants to understand the development and maintenance of PTSD and how trauma-focused cognitive behavioural therapy including prolonged exposure and cognitive restructuring can address these underlying processes and help to improve clients' PTSD symptoms and functioning.

Meet Vivien Lee, Ph.D., C.Psych.
Dr. Lee has extensive experience in working with adults and teenagers with trauma, PTSD, depression, anxiety, chronic pain, and substance use. She earned her PhD. and Master's degrees in Clinical Psychology from Western University and Hon. Bsc. from the University of Toronto. She worked as a staff psychologist in the Psychological Trauma Program and Work, Stress, and Health Program at the Centre for Addiction and Mental Health (CAMH from 2010-2017, and currently work full-time in private practice.
Dr. Lee is also experienced with operational stress injuries that can develop in military veterans and first responders (e.g. police, paramedics, firefighters, dispatchers, correctional officers) and other public safety personnel. She is a certified clinician trainer for the Road to Mental Readiness (R2MR) program developed by the Mental Health Commission of Canada (MHCC) and Department of National Defence (DND) and adapted for first responder services. She is registered with as a provider with Veteran Affairs Canada (VAC) and Department of National Defence (DND). Dr. Lee serves on the Board of Directors for Toronto Beyond the Blue, a support organization for family members of Toronto Police Service officers.
Dr. Lee is registered with the College of Psychologists of Ontario, and is a member of the International Society for Traumatic Stress Studies (ISTSS), the Traumatic Stress section of the Canadian Psychological Association (CPA), and the Ontario Psychological Association (OPA), the latter of which she served on the Board of Directors from 2008 to 2011.
