The prevalence of childhood trauma in our communities is staggering, and the implications for mental health and substance use profound. It is estimated that around 3 in 5 Canadian adults aged 45-85 identify as having been exposed to traumatic childhood experiences. Take part in this interactive learning experience focused on the principles of trauma-informed practice, why it is an essential component to providing quality care, and how to apply it in your work.
This training integrates current research from the fields of neuroscience, psychology and social work to demonstrate how individuals respond to traumatic experiences. The principles of Trauma-informed practice (TIP) will be identified and examined in detail. The relevance and application of TIP skills to mental health and substance use will be explored using case studies and group discussion. Resources will be shared for participants to further their learning and share with their teams.
This course will benefit anyone working with individuals who have experienced trauma or in sectors where there is a high prevalence of trauma. The trauma informed practice course will also appeal to managers and supervisors who are supporting staff to implement trauma-informed practice principles.

Learning Outcomes
- Recognize the prevalence of trauma and traumatic responses (bio-psycho-social-spiritual).
- Explain the principles of TIP and how to apply this knowledge to service delivery.
- Examine the connection between trauma, mental health, and substance use.
- Identify and describe trauma response-based behaviours as adaptive and protective functions.
- Apply tools to support individuals, and families, in the development of positive coping skills and self-understanding.
Who Should Attend
This course is recommended for individuals in sectors where there is high prevalence of trauma (i.e. child welfare/well-being, youth justice, mental health and addictions, developmental services, and residential care). This is for people looking to build their understanding of trauma informed practice.

This is a 6-hour training. This course consists of three 2-hour interactive virtual sessions using Zoom.
Instructor: Natasha Busic, MSW, RSW
Natasha has 10+ years of experience working in community and outreach based mental health care with vulnerable populations. Natasha has witnessed the difference Trauma Informed Practice can have on the quality care individuals receive and the impact this can have on their recovery. Natasha is committed to helping practitioners develop their understanding of trauma, trauma responses and TIP in hopes of creating safer and more meaningful care for vulnerable populations. Natasha is currently part-time faculty at Humber College and has a private practice in Guelph, ON.
