Description: Eating disorders (EDs) are complex biological and psychiatric illness associated with significant morbidity and mortality. Rates of adolescents presenting with EDs have risen sharply in recent years and both outpatient and inpatient settings are admitting an increasing number of patients with multi-diagnostic ED presentations (e.g., those with co-occurring suicide, self-injury, anxiety, depression, trauma, and/or substance use disorders). While family-based treatment is considered a first-line treatment for this population, up to 50 per cent of patients fail to respond adequately. Issues of emotional overcontrol and undercontrol are pervasive underlying factors that can complicate standard ED treatment approaches.
Dialectical Behaviour Therapy (DBT) provides a comprehensive and multi-modal framework for managing emotion regulation difficulties and multiple high-risk behaviours in the context of an eating disorder. This practical, hands-on webinar will highlight the latest research on the use of DBT for adolescents with EDs and their families and will provide training on how DBT can be utilized across levels of care to maximize outcomes. The presentation will include group discussion, role-play, video material, and patient handouts.
Learning objectives:
- Describe the rationale for using DBT for the treatment of EDs
- Explain how the Biosocial Theory has been adapted for ED treatment and is used to enhance case conceptualization
- Understand how to adapt the DBT target hierarchy and diary cards
- Conduct a behaviour chain or “missing link” analyses on purging, restricting, binge eating, and other symptoms
- Acquire strategies to enhance commitment
