Overview: Brief Narrative Therapy has emerged as one of the most utilized frameworks for working in time constrained contexts such as single session and walk-in therapy clinics.  As a derivative of broader narrative therapy, part of what is most compelling about the practice is an emphasis on conversations that have people experience personal agency drawing from their own skills and competencies that can inform immediate next steps and plans for action.

This virtual workshop will introduce participants to important concepts and accompanying practices including how we hear people's expressions as entry points to possibility, questions to assist people to make sense of those circumstances that lie outside of the problem, and important ways to co-develop plans of action extending the conversation well past the face to face contact.

The time is divided into two half day modules to allow reflection and practice of the material presented.

Learning Objectives:

  • Describe the mind-set and practice assumptions of brief narrative therapy.
  • Be familiar with the structure and accompanying micro-practices of brief narrative therapy.
  • Demonstrate familiarity with questions that elicit people’s local knowledge and preferences for life.
  • Utilize documentation practices and co-create take-away documents.
  • Help conversations endure past the face to face.
  • Assist people to create contextualized plans for action.
