Webinar: Older adults and service delivery from an anti-racist and anti-oppressive framework
Event date: -
Event type: Single day (a day or less)
There are two streams of thought in the world about taking care of older adults: in the east, families are supposed to take care of older adults and, in the west, long-term care (LTC) facilities take care of majority of older adults.
This webinar will explore many questions on perspectives in older adult care, including:
- What are the challenges of taking care of older adults in LTC facilities, from an eastern world view?
- How do older adults, from an eastern perspective, feel about staying in a ‘strange home’?
- Are there appropriate amenities for older adults from a different world view?
- What if older adults have never considered life in an LTC facility and going to a LTC facility is ‘scary’?
- What if an individual's language is not spoken?
- What if culturally appropriate food is not available?
- What if appropriate religious services and/or spaces are not available on-site?
Let’s talk about some these challenges in a diverse society and share our collective wisdom to help take care of those who have provided so much for us in Canada.
Objectives
In this webinar attendees will learn about:
- perspectives on taking care of older adults from the East versus the West
- philosophical frameworks of taking care of older adults
- competency in designing culturally appropriate care.
