Pathways beyond despair: Re-authoring lives of young people through narrative therapy

Presented by SickKids CCMH Learning Institute

Live webinar: September 28 and October 5, 2021 | Time: 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. EST

Facilitator: Angel Yuen, MSW, RSW

This training is suitable for:
Mental Health Professionals: psychotherapists, counsellors, psychologists, social workers  who work with clients aged 12 to adulthood.

This webinar will be relevant for those working with youth who are experiencing ongoing despair and suffering in relation to harm and injustices including violence, abuse, racism, poverty, and systemic oppression. Double-storied accounts will be brought forth (that is, where there are stories of hopelessness, there are always other stories). The facilitator will provide an overview of the ideas that shape Narrative Therapy and share illustrations of narrative practice which will bring forth political considerations that situate young people’s lives in broader social and historical contexts.

Narrative therapy is a collaborative and non-pathologizing approach to counselling and community work which centres people as the experts of their own lives. A narrative approach views problems as separate from people and assumes people as having many skills, abilities, values, commitments, beliefs, and competencies that will assist them to change their relationship with the problems influencing their lives. It is a way of working that considers the broader context of people’s lives particularly in the various dimensions of diversity including class, race, gender, sexual orientation, and ability.

Learning objectives:

  • Learn (or get a refresher) about the ideas that shape Narrative Therapy
  • Gain knowledge about hopeful and effective ideas and practices for re-authoring young people’s lives (externalizing, double-listening and unearthing skills in living)
  • Find ways of honouring the injustices and oppression youth may be experiencing as well as the skills and wisdom they are using to respond
  • Develop skills in Narrative Therapy practice via experiential exercises
