This training is suitable for:
Mental Health Professionals: Psychotherapists, counsellors, psychologists, social workers
Medical Professionals: Nurses, psychiatrists, pediatricians, family doctors
Pre-Requisite: Participants should have foundational knowledge around providing culturally responsive care to diverse populations
Description: The traumatic and negative association of racism among Black and Brown communities has received an increased amount of attention from researchers and mental health practitioners. This webinar caters to mental health providers who are committed to providing culturally responsive mental health service to minoritized communities, particularly Black individuals.
Topics covered will include identifying and addressing race-based stress and trauma, racial identity development, and the use of culturally responsive methods in the assessment and treatment of Black clients.
Learning objectives:
- Differentiate between multicultural and colorblind approaches to psychotherapy
- Discuss racial and cultural identity developmental, including White racial identity concepts
- Discuss the detrimental impact of racism (stereotypes, racial discrimination, etc.) on Black mental health
- Identify oppressive systems and the development of race-based stress and trauma
- Gain foundational knowledge needed to provide culturally responsive assessment and psychotherapy to Black clients
