This training is split over two sessions. In the first session, training will provide a brief overview of normal teen defiance as a foundation to discuss when this defiance is interfering with one’s functioning and meets criteria for an oppositional defiant disorder (ODD). Conduct disorder will also be discussed in relation to the diagnosis of ODD.
Using a bio-psycho-social approach, the origin of the behaviours will be reviewed. There will be a particular emphasis on the parent-child relationship and this potential relationship to the symptoms. Other psychiatric diagnosis, including trauma, will be discussed as a potential primary or co-morbid diagnosis.
The second session will focus on assessment and treatment approaches which will include an overview of principles of attachment and trauma as the foundation for how to address any parent-child relational issues and how to engage children and youth in a trusting therapeutic relationship. Strategies to address specific behaviours demonstrated by oppositional youth (including non-compliance and anger) will be reviewed to help parents/guardians and workers identify how to disengage from conflict and support the client.
Registration fees: $250. Student and group rates are available
