When the personal is professional: Understanding and addressing vicarious trauma

Presented by SickKids CCMH Learning Institute

Live webinar October 29, 2021 | Time: 9:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. EST

Facilitator: Bo Yih Thom, MSW, RSW

Finding it harder to practice self-care after years in the field? Not feeling “yourself” at work or at home? You may be affected by vicarious trauma or compassion fatigue, which are common experiences among clinicians, medical professionals, direct service workers, direct responders, educators, and advocates.

This half-day training will take an in-depth look at compassion fatigue, vicarious trauma, burnout, and resourcing. Practical information is further developed through individual and group activities. This workshop invites participants to actively develop knowledge together, through self-reflection and participatory processes.

After reviewing information on standard contributing factors to vicarious trauma and compassion fatigue, we will discuss how working conditions have changed throughout the pandemic, to increase risk factors for clinician mental health. Resourcing practices will be tailored to include polyvagal and tapping practices that address the heightened stress in direct service setting and in the online culture of service delivery.

Learning objectives:

  • Understand the differences and relationship between compassion fatigue, vicarious trauma, and burnout
  • Recognize possible signs and contributing factors through an intersectional lens
  • Explore challenges to self-care
  • Acquire resiliency-based strategies to address compassion fatigue, vicarious trauma, and burnout
  • Learn about debriefing techniques that minimize impact on the listener

Registration fees: $125. Student and group rates are available.
