About this event

Wellness Through Words is a small group program that meets every two weeks to improve your health literacy skills. In a supportive learning environment, you will have the chance to strengthen your reading, writing, and comprehension skills to:

- Understand health materials, like medication instructions and health pamphlets

- Ask questions and understand answers from your health care team

- Make informed choices about your own health and wellness

- Find and use health care services in your community

Wellness Through Words will help manage your recovery journey with greater confidence and knowledge.

About the facilitator:

Gideon Steinberg (he/him) started working at United for Literacy in 2021, and currently facilitates several programs including a soft skills workshop, a book club, and Pathways to Post Secondary, which provides individualized support to people who are interested in pursuing a college or university education.

Gideon has also worked as an instructor for a high school equivalency program, was a frontline staff member in the Toronto shelter system, taught at a high school for students with developmental disabilities, and has tutored individuals of all ages and educational levels.

He is a firm believer in a student-centred approach to learning, and is mindful of the influence that institutions and systems have in affecting people’s lives.

In his spare time, he enjoys cooking, reading, hiking, and hanging out with his cat Isobel.

This program is hosted in collaboration with United for Literacy. United for Literacy (formerly Frontier College) is a national charitable literacy organization. They believe literacy is a right, and operate under the guiding principle that every place is a learning place. They work together with over 500 partners each year to provide innovative literacy, numeracy, and foundational skills programs to over 30,000 children, youth, and adults in over 200 communities across Canada. Their literacy and numeracy support programs are open to everyone, at no cost. To find out more about United for Literacy, please visit www.unitedforliteracy.ca.
