Working with Self-Injuring and Suicidal Adolescents: A Collaborative Strengths-Based Family Therapy Approach
Presented by: Matthew D. Selekman, MSW, LCSW
June 18, 2021 @ 12:00pm-2:00 pm EST
Working with self-injuring and suicidal adolescents and their families can be two of the most challenging clinical dilemmas we will all face in our practice settings today. To further complicate matters, adolescents self-injuring often has concurrent difficulties with eating disorders and substance abuse. Research indicates that the longer an adolescent’s career is in engaging in a self-injuring practice and as the life consequences increase, the more she/he is at high-risk for a suicide attempt or multiple attempts. Many self-injuring and suicidal adolescents have grave difficulty coping with negative emotion and high levels of stress and have grown up in family environments where they have experienced parental emotional invalidation and disconnection.
In this “hands-on” practice-oriented webinar, we will discuss the latest research on adolescent self-injuring and suicidal behaviors that can inform our clinical practices. Effective treatment methods that have shown positive outcomes with self-injuring and suicidal adolescents and their families are discussed
This Webinar is FREE for Ontario Registered Social Workers (RSW), Registered Social Service Workers (RSSW) and Students of Social Work and Social Service Work Programs. Please note: If you are not an RSW, RSSW or student of these programs in Ontario, you may still attend but will be charged a nominal fee of $35.
