Adults who mix cannabis with opioids for pain report higher anxiety, depression

in Community voices and knowledge sharing |

Adults who take prescription opioids for severe pain are more likely to have increased anxiety, depression and substance abuse issues if they also use marijuana.

"Given the fact that cannabis potentially has analgesic properties, some people are turning to it to potentially manage their pain," Andrew Rogers, said in describing the work.

The study revealed not only elevated anxiety and depression symptoms, but also tobacco, alcohol, cocaine and sedative use among those who added the cannabis, compared with those who used opioids alone. No increased pain reduction was reported.

What are your thoughts on these findings?

It seems pretty basic to me, that the more developmental and attachment trauma you have, the more deficits in emotion regulation, and the more dissociation you have - well, the more symptoms you will have, the more co-morbidity and the more likely you are to resort to poly-substance abuse or to other distress relieving behaviors.

I think that's where the article is going as well.

I hope no-one misreads this and thinks that somehow cannabis or opioids, or cannabis and opioids together are the cause of self-reported anxiety and depression, rather than a marker for more severe underlying distress.
