The common belief among medical professionals is that depression only happens in western countries. Now, researchers have found strong evidence that depression is "a fundamental human experience."
For the first time, researchers looked beyond cause of death on death certificates to the global causes of illness and disability. They found that the single biggest cause of disability worldwide is mental illness – most commonly depression and anxiety. In the poorest and the richest countries, and at every socioeconomic level, mental illness was were "the greatest thief of productive life." Read more in The Guardian.
