Adverse Childhood Events, Emotional dysregulation and Gambling: A potential link?
Adverse Childhood Events (ACE) are negative experiences (such as abuse, neglect, dysfunctional household dynamics, and parental substance abuse, etc) during childhood that have been associated with different types of physical and mental conditions in adulthood. Researchers in Canada looked specifically at the impact of ACEs on gambling addictions in adulthood and looked at whether emotional dysregulation impacts this relationship. Emotional dysregulation is when an individual finds it...

Re: Adverse Childhood Events, Emotional dysregulation and Gambling: A potential link?
This intersects well with the work of Dr Gabor Mate who talks about the connection between trauma and addiction. Many addiction programs teach their clients about emotional regulation who greatly benefit from it. We would ask all clients coming into the problem gambling and technology use program at CAMH about any history of trauma.

Thanks Peter and Hamza, this is so insightful. We did have Dr. Mate come present at Addiction Rounds a couple of years ago. It was really well received. Great to see this transfer over.

Re: Adverse Childhood Events, Emotional dysregulation and Gambling: A potential link?
Thank you Peter for your insight. Dr. Gabor Mate's explanation of trauma and addiction definitely helps to shed light on the impacts of early childhood traumatic experiences and addiction. Also its nice to see that this work on trauma is being translated into the clinical practice setting.

Gambling and advertising: Should there be more regulations?
With the launch of iGaming (the organization responsible for regulating online casinos and esport betting sites) in April 2022 a new wave of online gambling and online sports betting opportunities have now opened up to Ontarians. This has also brought with it understandable concerns around the potential increase in problematic gambling. In a recent CBC article on the launch of iGaming the CEO of Great Canadian Gaming (a brick-and-mortar casino company) highlighted that physical casinos are...

Re: Gambling and advertising: Should there be more regulations?
My short answer is yes, including the way that media reports on when people win the lottery jackpots. They potentially propagate gambling myths by saying things such as: they won by playing the same numbers for the past 36 years and you could be next, or they picked their numbers by using birthdays and anniversary dates and it finally paid off. This gives people a message that they can somehow influence the outcome of the game. There is lots more to say but I will leave it at this for now.

Re: Gambling and advertising: Should there be more regulations?
The point about regulating how the media reports on lottery jackpots really resonated with me. In my opinion there is a disproportionate emphasis on winners and not enough emphasis on the likelihood of loss which skews people's perspective on their chances of winning. That being said I don't know how popular a news segment would be if they are mostly speaking about people who lost

Perceptions of Gambling Addiction on Twitter

After removing unrelated Tweets they were left with 144 Tweets. From these Tweets they inferred some of the following themes: Betting...

And that's why they don't report losses. Its just not appealing. Not that they should have to, but stop feeding into the myths about the actual chances of winning. I know that Dr Nigel Turner from CAMH recently did a series of media interviews on gambling and did mention his research on Knowledge of random events and chance in people with gambling problems. https://www.tandfonline.com/do...4459795.2021.2014930 But we are dealing with the gaming industry which is a big fish in the pond.
